  • Shredder Woes

Tonight I was shredding a stack of old papers when my shredder started making a clunking noise every few seconds.  Curious, I just let it go and it got louder and louder until the grinders stopped spinning.  The motor was still going, faster than ever actually, but the grinders sat still.

Unable to accept that I broke it, I decided to take it apart and have a look.  After a few minutes I had the cover off and nothing jumped out as being disconnected or busted.   So I dug further, this time taking the gear box housing apart.  It didn’t take long to see the problem – a busted gear tooth 😦

The missing gear tooth was found lodged in another gear.  I ran to the store to get some Krazy Glue and reattached the broken piece.  After putting it all back together, it worked!  For about 3 minutes.  The glue and already-mangled tooth couldn’t handle the pressure.  I suspect it didn’t help that they have a metal gear turning a plastic one.

I looked it up and found that it’s out of warranty by a couple years, so I instead emailed their support begging for a replacement gear (and attached a nice photo showing the gear I need).  I honestly doubt that I’ll be able to get one, but it’s worth a shot.  It wasn’t a cheapie.

    If you’re curious, it’s a Fellowes OD700C personal shredder.

Anyone from Fellowes out there? 😉

  • Storm

We had a thunderstorm roll through the area this evening, taking our power with it for a couple of hours.  As the sun was starting to come back out, it began pouring, making way for this:

  • Alan Greenspan, please shut up

Yesterday an article ran in the Financial Times by former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan.  Nevermind that much of the blame for our current housing situation may rest upon his shoulders, his recent articles (he piped up again a couple weeks ago) have bugged me a bit.   Is it right for the former chairman to be throwing his opinion out there so publicly?  It seems he’s essentially undermining the efforts of the current chairman, Ben Bernanke, every time he opens his mouth.  And since he is the former golden boy, the markets and everyone listens.

Mr. Greenspan – you’re retired. How about being quiet, and showing some respect for the efforts being put forth by Mr. Bernanke?  We don’t see the previous President of the United States playing armchair quarterback, and I don’t think you should either.

  • Random Updates

Here are a few very disconnected thoughts…

Central Illinois is finally receiving its dose of summer heat and misery with high humidity and temperatures in the high nineties.  Just in time for the State Fair too…

Fruit Punch seems to be the most popular Gatorade, although I suspect Ana may have voted more than once…

Here’s the grin David gave Ana last week when she walked into the room after work…

What a great smile to come home to…

David has been doing a pseudo-crawl; we’ve dubbed it the Army Man Scoot.  He’s getting pretty good at it, and can slide across our family room in no time.  Taking advantage of this, I joined him on the floor tonight and had him chasing me around the room.  I’d duck around a corner, let out a growl and he’d “growl” back at me before screaming in laughter when I’d reappear and come after him.  It was a blast…

Ana and David played some more piano tonight…

Jay and Katherine are packing up their house in preparation for moving across town, so we’ve had to do some network reconfiguration.  I’ll no longer need the antenna on my roof, but I’m contemplating replacing it with an external XM Radio antenna…

Speaking of XM, aren’t those things in geosynchronous orbit?  Then why do I have to keep adjusting my XM antenna?

When David gets tired of scooting, this happens…

That looks pretty good, I’m heading to bed…

  • A Photo of David for Mommy

Ana, here’s your reward for reading the Olympics post.

  • 2008 Beijing Olympics

We’re just one week away from the start of the 2008 summer games!  Excited?!  The opening ceremonies will be airing next Friday evening, with plenty of events starting the following day.  I need to take the time and figure out what needs to be watched and recorded, and on what channels.   The olympics always provide a nice diversion from the norm, it should be fun.

This year in particular, there are a few side-stories that I’m interested in seeing play out:

    Pollution in Beijing

Ever since Beijing was awarded the 2008 summer games way back in 2001, they have been working on plans for curbing the pollution for the games.  They have spent a fortune. According to this article out of China, they were planning on spending $3 Billion on pollution control in Beijing – last year alone. They’ve even employed a Research Center for Weather Modification (that’s a little scary, isn’t it?).

I’ve tried to find updated figures, but haven’t been able to really track any down.  Probably because it isn’t working.  They have shut down factories in something like 5 provinces and mandated a 50% drop in car traffic (you can only drive every other day, based on license plate), but the smog persists (note: that article puts the pollution control cost at $17 billion).  It’s so bad that it’s nearly triple the World Health Organization’s acceptable levels, and at least one athlete has pulled out, guarding his health.  The US Olympic Committee has apparently been developing a top secret mask to fight the pollution, and some teams are going to be wearing red contact lenses to help see through the haze.

So, it’s going to be interesting to see how many events will be impacted by this – both in delays and just poor performances by the athletes.

    Censorship and criticism in Beijing

Related to the pollution topic, I’m curious as to how Chinese officials are going to react when they start hearing public/broadcast criticism of the poor air quality.  Or will the broadcasters keep mum until they’re out of China?

The censorship issue is rearing its head again.  China is known for its notorious censorship, in recent years for their stranglehold on the internet with the Great Firewall of China.  When they were given the Olympics, they agreed to allow free access for visitors, but as of today that is a lie (can’t have a reporter looking up Amnesty International or reading about the monks’ plight!).

    New Speedo Swimming Suit

With the help of NASA engineers, Speedo came out with a controversial new suit last year called the LZR (pronounced Laser).  It’s controversial because of its amazing ability to reduce drag on a swimmer. Those countries that don’t have it are protesting its use, and those that do are breaking records at a dramatic pace.  Only time will tell how many Olympic records are going to fall.

    Local Diver

The Springfield area is seeing a local athlete in the competition.   Kelci Bryant of Chatham, IL is competing in synchronized diving – definitely an event I normally wouldn’t watch, but will now.  Good luck Kelci!

    Algae Bloom

There’s an enormous algae bloom overtaking the water where the worlds best are supposed to compete.  Thousands and thousands of citizens and fishermen are trying to clean it up – will it be enough???

It’s going to be a fun couple of weeks!

And on a related note, I saw a photo today on one of the news sites of a Chinese worker tending to the grass outside of the massive Olympic Greens.  You know you have too many people when you’re cutting the grass with scissors!

Anyone else out there find any of this interesting?

  • Eat the Shark!

A couple of weekends ago we took David for his second time swimming.  I think he was less of a fan than the first time!

  • Dell PowerEdge SC440

Late last week I found a great deal on Dell.com for an entry-level PowerEdge Server, the SC440.  A couple years ago I bought an SC430 and it has been running great, so I know they’re good machines.  The machine I bought last week, which was delivered yesterday, is a 2Ghz dual core Intel w/ 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, and no Operating System.

Last night I decided to get it out of the box and install Windows 2008.  Being curious, I decided to use the Dell Management Tools CD to install a few things pre-OS (a utility partition, etc).  So I put the disc in and rebooted.  Nothing but the standard “No Operating System…” message.  Tried a few more times, same results.

I figured I’d forget it and just go on with a normal OS install and popped in the Windows 08 disc.  Same thing, the machine just didn’t want to boot from disc.  Being annoyed, I hopped online and chatted with Dell tech support.

    The answer?

Get this… Dell actually sells these things with CDROM only by default – NO DVD DRIVE!  I couldn’t believe that a) they still sell CDROM-only and b) they still packaged a DVD with the server!

I swapped the drive with a DVD drive I had laying around and went on my way.  Lesson learned, pay more attention to the little options on the order page.

  • Garden Storage Box

Tonight I pretty much finished the storage box for the garden I mentioned earlier this week.  I’ve been able to work on it for a couple of hours every night this week after David has gone to bed, so quite a bit of progress was made.  All that’s left is to find a suitable latch for the front doors and then get it painted/stained/sealed to endure the outdoors.

It has been a fun little project to help me get more comfortable with this type of work.  More photos are available.  I’ll post more photos once it’s all painted and moved to the garden.

  • Lawn Darts

Ah yes, throwing two lawn darts into the air at once.  What could possibly go wrong?

My name is Eric, and I played with Lawn Darts… and LOVED IT.
