Ramblings of a geek with a few hobbies…

  • Food Post I

Just a heads-up to anyone in the Springfield area that shops at Meijer and likes sweet corn.  They’re selling some now, but it doesn’t taste very good. 😦

  • More Internet Issues

I apologize for the issues thejohnsonblog may be experiencing with connectivity – Comcast is apparently still learning how to run a network.

  • Mr. Serious

We took David on a little walk before dinner – he wasn’t too pleased with the before dinner part.

  • WordPress upgrade and a new theme

I got bored tonight and upgraded to the latest version of WordPress, tada!

I also decided that it was time to find a new theme since my last one (BigBlue) was feeling a little old to me.   I’m not all too impressed with my web design skills, so I don’t mess around with creating my own themes.  It didn’t take long to come across the one you’re seeing right now (called Cutline 3-Column Split), so I figured I would spend a little more time and go through my photo collection looking for header images to display here.  I’ve uploaded 30+ for the time being, I hope you like them.

  • Faults

I recall learning about the New Madrid fault line in school (there are those pesky teachers again!) and not thinking a whole lot of it at the time.  But shortly after Hurrican Katrina and all of the flooding down in New Orleans, my mind periodically wandered back to this thought….

If there were a large quake along the fault line that caused quite a bit of damage, since buildings around here just aren’t made to put up with the earth moving beneath them, would the rest of the country sit and think Well you idiots lived on the 2nd largest fault line in the country, what do you expect?!   I mean, how many times have we griped at those that complain about their houses being flooded when they keep rebuilding in a flood plain?

  • Good Morning!

What a fun little wakeup call that was!

Actually, Ana and I had just woken up a couple minutes before it started.  Ana want to see why David was crying, and that’s when things started to shake a little bit.  I didn’t think it was a tornado, but rather just some very strong winds that aren’t all too uncommon here.  Then it just kept getting stronger and stronger, to the point that the bed was shaking in a really freaky poltergeist sorta way.

If you tell someone in Illinois that there’s a tornado, instinct just kicks in and they’ll head to a center room or basement without hesitation.  Not so with an earthquake – the confusion of having just woken up, and my house sounding like it was shaking apart made me stop and concentrate a little on what exactly you’re supposed to do in one of these things.  I know it sounds a little silly, but I just wanted to get the heck out of there at that point because it was just getting worse and worse.

As it peaked we found ourselves standing beneath a bathroom doorframe, just kinda dazed at the really weird feeling of shifting back and forth.  Thanks grade-school earthquake preparation training!

  • 5.4

Word is that it was centered in West Salem, IL by the Illinois/Indiana border.

  • Earthquake??

Woah, we just woke up to the entire house shaking for about 15 seconds.  Wow that was freaky.

  • Pogo?

Slashdot just posted an article about some new “3D” browser that AT&T is building called Pogo.   Meh.  Big deal.

Why do so many “3D” applications really bring nothing new to the table?   The screenshots for Pogo show a Vista-style “3d-flip” sorta thing, with nothing but the page title and DATE displayed next to it.  Oh boy, that’s useful.

Sure I’ll try a 3D browser, if maybe it used “3D” for something other than switching between tabs.  Can we not somehow use this capability/”technology” to really bring some more value to the table? The requirements for this new browser are pretty steep, so how about we get something for it?  How about using a “3d” capability to view the history of a page as it has changed over time as you’ve been sitting there on the page?  Hell, I don’t even know if that would be useful.

Maybe the BLINK tag should be brought back and shown in ultra-cool-3D mode.  That’d be worth it.
