Ramblings of a geek with a few hobbies…

Well I can’t believe it has been a few weeks since my last post. Not a whole lot has happened, but it sure has been busy. Work is busier and more hectic than ever before – there’s so much to do, and so little time

Congrats to Jay and Katherine on the purchase of their house (large picture alert..). Ana and I have been helping them out with odds and ends – painting and other random new home chores.

Two weekends ago I watched my telescope crash to the deck out back. I had attached it to the mount and started balancing it, when it just rolled right off the mount and hit the floor. I couldn’t believe it, histarical is probably the word to best describe it. The tube got several good sized dents, which made me sick, but the optics appear to have survived just fine. A couple days after the incident I purchased an automotive dent removal kit that worked wonders on the tube. Thank goodness.

Today I discovered that Civilization 4 was released, so after work I headed over to Best Buy to pick up a copy. I’m not much of a gamer, Civ games are the only ones I’ve ever really consistently purchased ASAP. My hardware isn’t anywhere near spectacular but it met minimum requirements on everything and met recommended on most; the game runs like shit. I’m not anywhere near the only one though, people who have spent much much much more on their gaming machines are having the same problems I am. Hopefully a patch will be released soon.

That’s it really. Like I said, not much new stuff going on.

  • Awesome FireFox Extension

ScrapBook is pretty darn cool. Just found and installed it, looks like it’ll be very handy.

  • Busch Stadium

Ana and I were fortunate to be able to go to the Cardinal game Saturday, what will be the last regular season game we attend in Busch Stadium as we know it. I’m sure the new Busch will be great, but we’ll miss the “old” one a lot. I’ve been going to this one for about 20 years and have a lot of memories from it – mostly with my dad, in recent years mostly with Ana, and with other family and friends sprinkled throughout.

Just sitting here thinking about it, I recall quite a bit. I’ve had my birthday listed on the scoreboard when I was young (thanks dad!) and witnessed quite a few things: Ozzie Smith’s last game, the old astroturf (walked on it once), the “new” grass, the remodeling over the years, McGwire taking BP, McGwire’s 500th home run, many fantastic playoff games in the recent years… the list goes on. Just writing this brings more to my mind.

For some reason, I vividly remember one chilly evening sitting in the bleachers with dad. I don’t think I was much over 10 years old and it had to have been an early Spring or late Fall game, based on the chill. It was a week night, well past 11 if I recall correctly. Dad had work in the morning and I had school, but there we were sitting in very empty bleachers watching the Cards in extra innings. I remember being all stretched out over the benches and staring up at the huge scoreboard/replay screen. Watching the Cardinals with dad; no rush to get home. Man that was great.

I remember the first time I sat in Field Box seats. We (dad and I) had rushed down to Stl after he had gotten off work. Rushed a little to fast – he got a speeding ticket which delayed our arrival until something like the middle of the 3rd inning. I had never walked “down” to seats at Busch before (those who have been there know what I mean), and as soon as we sat down I was amazed. I can still picture how big and close those San Francisco players looked.

Then there was the ballgame on the Sunday after my first high school prom. That was the prom where I first went out with Ana. Then there was the first ballgame Ana came with dad and I – she wore green. Not a shred of red. I still pick on her to this day for it.

There were a few games attended during college, most notable was one after doing horrible on an ECE exam the night before. The consolation was that we got to the park early and watched a good hour of batting practice – dad even caught one hit out by McGwire. I have pictures from that game in my office here at home.

Ana and I do what we can to make it to a few games together every year. Who would have thought I’d be lucky enough to marry a woman that likes to sit quietly with me and watch baseball. Not me.

I walked out of there tonight thinking “Farewell Busch, you’ve been good to me.”.

Well, that’s enough rambling for me tonight. I apologize for it being so long and probably boring. But there are a few of you out there that know feelings like these.

We took lots of pictures that I’ll have posted in the next day or so. Until then, here’s one panoramic I just stitched together.

  • AmbientOrbSvc

    ambient orb service

That’s my new Ambient Orb Service up and running. There’s still some cleanup to do and an installer to create, but it is runnable!

  • Orb Status

Just a little progress report on the code I’m writing for the Ambient Orb

I have just finished the calculations needed to process the Clear Sky Clock. The orb will basically show a sky forecast for the next 48 hours (more details below for those interested). Right now that’s the only one I am playing with, but I’m also going to be creating a windows service wrapper with scheduling capabilities so I can have the orb, for instance, show sky data on nights and weekends while showing some other data during the day. That’ll all be pretty easy to do, and writing “plugin” data providers for the orb will be a piece of cake.

Back to the calculation… I take the data provided by that website, then calculate each hour’s weighted average (sky transparency, cloud cover, and ‘seeing’). Those values are then averaged over a configurable calculation window (hard coded to 3 hours right now) since I don’t want the orb to show me that the sky is fantastic when it is only going to be that way for an hour (setting up the scope and letting it cool down takes about an hour). The code then takes the calculation window with the greatest average as the one to report on. A window value of 100 is blue, 0 is red. I then take the forecast time of that window divided by the window size to determine the animation. Fast flashing would indicate the forecast is for the next 3 hours in my case. No flashing basically means that it’s 20 hours away or so.

Next step is to have all of the options and threshholds configurable, then move on to the windows service. I’m pretty excited about having it almost done, especially since I haven’t spent much time with it at all!

  • Birthday

As of yesterday I am now 26 years old. We celebrated with a trip to Alexander’s Steakhouse so I could get my free meal (when you bring in 3 others). Mmmmm…. steak.

My gifts were fantastic. Jay and Katherine are getting me the wireless access point I’m going to need when we construct the Trans-Palisades network later this month, Ana got me some clothes (including a “Keep out of Direct Sunlight” t-shirt) and something I’ve wanted for a long time…. an Ambient Orb! Just upgraded to a premium account and plan on exploring their “developer” stuff this evening. Right now it’s sitting on my desk doing its default reporting of the Dow status. Pretty cool.

And finally, my parents tracked down a Rummy Royal game. For those who haven’t played, it’s a fun way to spend a few hours. I’m sure it’ll be used plenty.

  • Weekend?

Where the heck did the long weekend go?? Painting, that’s where. Ana and I decided to brighten up our house a little bit by painting the family room, kitchen, and foyer. It took the better part of 3 days to get it all done, with the help of Jay and Katherine, and we are exhausted and not looking forward to getting up for work in the morning.

Photos are up in the gallery. You may notice that all of the house related pictures are hidden from view. Just didn’t feel right essentially having an entire blueprint and inventory online for the world to see. If you would like the login, shoot me an email or IM me and I’ll send you the information. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If/when you get a login, the photos are here.

  • New Orleans

I typically don’t comment on current events, but I have just been astounded in the past 48 hours at the breakdown of society in New Orleans. I never imagined I would be seeing a disaster in the U.S. unfold on television where the rescuers and authorities were essentially paralyzed out of security fears.

I can understand people taking food, water, and other necessities (I’m certain I’d do the same in that situation) from stores – but the rampant theft of everything else is insane. Electronics? Sports jerseys? WTF? I have viewed crime as something done for personal gain. But in this situation, what the hell is to be gained? Every one of them is in the same cesspool.

And the stories of murder?? Rape?? Growing up, and until 2 days ago, I often wondered about why the National Guard was called in after natural disasters. It’s vividly clear now – boy was I naive.

Our prayers go out to all those suffering, hopefully the pain will lighten.

  • Work Quote of the Day

“the server ate too much sausage and its clogged. ive seen it happen before.” – Brian Nottingham

    That’s awesome.

  • Meteor Shower and a Day Off

Today my department has a day off, with a picnic at the lake starting at 11:30. I was excited to learn that this coincided with the annual Perseid meteor showers which peaked at predawn this morning. Unfortunately the clouds didn’t cooperate this morning so we weren’t able to see any and were forced to head to bed at 4am.
